Ashley Bell Signs to Play for Southern Connecticut

Ashley Bell will be running for the Owls next year!

(June, 2008 - Riverhead, NY) Ashley Bell is the definition of a scholar / athlete. Ashley has received an athletic scholarship at the Southern Connecticut State University and will be running with the Owls next year. She is an outstanding athlete--she was All-State in track and played on the varsity basketball and field hockey teams. Ashley qualified in the 100 and 200 meters and ran the anchor leg on the winning 4 x 100 (12.4 seconds) at the state track qualifiers. She won the 100 and she took second in the 200 (25.44). The 4 x 100 team consists of Ashley, Quiera DeCosta, Victoria Crum and Ellie Markewitz. The team finished the race in a season-best time of 49.2 seconds. She is a Gold Key Award recipient, was the Suffolk PE Zone Award winner and was chosen as the News Review’s female athlete of the year. She also won the Presidential Fitness Award in PE class.

Ashley is also an outstanding scholar. She is on the Principal's High Honor Roll. She won several scholarships and academic awards at the Sr. Awards Night (i.e., The RCFA Terri Peters Memorial Scholarship, a Tara L. Stephens Memorial/Goodale Productions Scholarship, and the House of Praise Scholarship). She was also one of five local high school women to be awarded $1,000 each in a ceremony at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Lab. The BNL “Women in Science Award” recognizes high school women who show a strong interest in and aptitude for science. Ashley plans to major in math with a minor in physics.

“Ashley is an excellent student,” states RHS physics teacher Kim Skinner, “but just as importantly, she is an outstanding person. She is a fantastic role model for all the young women in her classes and she is always ready to help other students.”
